Name: Juno
Sex: Female
Current Age: 9 yrs.
Into Foster Care: April 8, 2005
Comments:
Juno is one of the silliest, sweet and gorgeous foster dogs we have ever had in rescue.  Unfortunately, she also has the absolute worst case of resource guarding that we have ever seen in a dog.  Maybe her life before coming to us was lacking in the love and the good things that she should have gotten, but whatever she experienced before caused her to hoard and guard every toy, leash, bowl, and clump of dirt she found.  Juno has even been known, when stressed, to resource guard her own paw.  We decided she needed some serious rehab and she was sent to a foster home with experience in these things.  Once there, we realized that along with her resource guarding, Juno had something else going on.  It seemed she was in pain along her back and rear end.  Off to the vet she went, and after doing tests and x-rays, we found she has significant arthritis in her spine that no doubt was causing her much pain.  We put a course of meds in place for her, and she is now doing great-she is bouncing around and leaping off the deck like a puppy.  Juno will be on these meds for life, no doubt increasing the dosages and types as the arthritis gets worse.  We are monitoring her closely, along with our vet, to make sure that the medication is doing its job and making sure her liver and other values are not affected by the medicines.

These two issues -- her ongoing medical care combined with her resource guarding (which, after a year of training and counter conditioning has gotten MUCH better) -- made us realize she was not a good candidate for adoption.  Juno is doing beautifully in her foster home and to take her from that environment would not be in her best interest.  She will stay as an Adopt a Husky foster dog, with AAHI paying for all her medical care, for the rest of her life.
